SUMMARY:Farm to Film Fest 2023
DESCRIPTION:It matters how farmers farm and eaters eat. Our current food system is not supporting people or the planet – but there is tremendous hope for change. By developing a deeper understanding of regenerative agriculture and the indigenous practices it is rooted in\, we can all do our part to support transformational change. Join us for a day of food\, films\, live music\, workshops\, thoughtful discussion\, dancing and more! \nFarm to Film Fest 2023 is a collaboration between JAM – Junction Arts & Media\, Vital Communities\, and King Arther Baking Company\, made possible in part through support from Vermont Humanities and media sponsor Vermont Public that aims to build awareness of the importance of agriculture as a climate solution and of the harms the current exploitive\, racist\, and unsustainable food system creates. Our mission is to promote Upper Valley farms that are taking direct climate action and to share hopeful solutions for climate crisis. \nView Farm To Film Festival 2023 schedule.

SUMMARY:Climate Farmer Stories Exhibit at JAM
DESCRIPTION:For the month of October JAM will display “Climate Farmer Stories\,” a new multimedia exhibit that shares the stories and portraits of 13 Upper Valley farmers who are using agricultural methods that mitigate and adapt to climate change and help build a food supply that can withstand the impact of climate disruption.  The exhibit is one part of Vital Communities’ Climate Farmer Stories project\, a three-year effort to increase farmer income while changing the perception about farming and climate change. Funded by the US Department of Agriculture\, the project brings together Upper Valley farmers\, artists\, and nonprofit staff to change the story of farming and climate change\, while increasing the marketing skills and resources for participating farmers. “Addressing climate change through food requires us to get back to the roots of farming\,” said Nancy LaRowe\, Vital Communities’ Director of Food & Farm and Economy. “Climate farmers can help mitigate climate change by returning to farming practices that strive to support natural systems\, as opposed to scaling up with more ‘efficient’ technologies that are denigrating natural ecosystems. This is the hopeful story that needs to be shared as we see and experience the impacts of the climate crisis. People can choose how to spend their food dollars\, and buying local food from climate conscious farmers is an investment in community resilience and climate action.”

SUMMARY:Town of Hartford & Lebanon Juneteenth Celebration Livestream
DESCRIPTION:Tune into our Livestream of the Town of Hartford & Lebanon Juneteenth Celebration! \nLivestream link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0yB3JLsaLk \nThis year’s Celebration will mark the first time both Upper Valley Town of Hartford\, VT\, and City of Lebanon\, NH will collaborate to hold a single Juneteenth Celebration. The Hartford Committee on Racial Equity and Inclusion along with support from the City of Lebanon\, Alice Peck Day Hospital\, and the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department have come together to commemorate the 158th anniversary of the events of June 19\, 1865. On that day\, Union General Gordon Granger and 2\,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston\, Texas to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its enslaved persons. The event today is known as Juneteenth and is celebrated widely across the United States. Juneteenth programming will include remarks by Vermont state representative Kevin “Coach” Christy\, the Executive Director of the Vermont Office of Racial Equity\, Xusana Davis\, and chair of the equity committee for the Vermont League of Cities and Town and Winooski city manager\, Elaine Wang\, among others. Both Hartford and Lebanon school systems will be represented with presentations from the two districts. Children’s activities will be offered all day. DJ Sean from Livemix Kings will be playing the tunes for the event. Food and other vendors will be on site for the celebration. The event will be televised by Junction Arts and Media.

SUMMARY:Utica: The Last Refuge Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join 3CVT\, TRORC\, GMEDC\, SHARe\, Vital Communities\, and regional partners for a pre-screening community potluck\, film\, and post-film panel discussion on “Utica: The Last Refuge”.\nThis film is about immigration and inclusivity\, how refugees positively impact local economies\, and all the struggles they face. It directly relates to challenges in the Upper Valley including: housing\, childcare\, transportation\, diversity\, food security\, inclusivity\, and more.\nFREE and open to the public!\nLet us know you’re coming HERE\n\nSchedule:\n5:30PM Community Reception & Potluck – Briggs Opera House Lobby\, 2nd floor\n6:30PM “Utica: The Last Refuge” Film Screening & Post-Film Discussion Panel – Briggs Opera House\n\nAbout The Film\n“Utica: The Last Refuge tells the story of how a struggling rustbelt city has rebounded via the major contribution of its refugee population. Given that there are 25 million refugees globally\, fewer than 1% of whom are likely to be resettled by current standards\, there is a lot to be learned from Utica’s example.\nWe know that resettling refugees is one way we can fulfill our humanitarian obligations. If it can be shown that doing so benefits the communities in which they land\, which is well supported by data\, ramping the program up makes great sense.”\nLearn more at about the film HERE.\nWe strive to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals to engage fully. To request an accommodation or for inquiries about accessibility\, please contact masbury@trorc.org.

SUMMARY:"A Night of Poetry & Black Music" - Book Release Party & Reading by Vievee Francis\, with music by Steven Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Live Music\, Barbecue\, Film Screenings\, Book Reading\, Signing\, and Dance Party Celebration \n \nAcclaimed poet Vievee Francis brings a “Night of Poetry & Black Music” and book release reading from her new work\, The Shared World to JAM.  Her latest collection imagines the ideas and ideals and spaces of the Black woman\, delving into inherited memories and restrictions between families\, lovers\, and strangers and the perception and inconvenient truth of Black woman as mother—with or without child. Books will be sold on site by Still North Books & Bar with BBQ from Wicked Awesome BBQ. \n  \nLive Blues music will be headlined by visiting artist Steven Johnson\, CEO of the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation and grandson of blues legend Robert Johnson\, of Crystal Springs\, MS with band Kit Creeger\, Doc Winslow\, Steve Drebber\, David Westphalen\, and Jakob Breitbach.  A sneak peek of documentary-film-in-progress\, “I Believe I’ll Go Back Home\,” directed by Samantha Davidson Green with partial funding from Mississippi Humanities Council\, will also be shown. Debunking the myth of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil in exchange for his talent\, the film illuminates a missing chapter Robert Johnson’s life when he returned home to Copiah Co. Mississippi at a critical point in his musical development\, fathered a child\, and left a living legacy in the Johnson grandchildren who are working to inspire future generations through the elevation of blues heritage and uniting of sacred and secular music in the African American tradition. \n  \n \nThe night will close out with a dance party with JAM’s own inimitable DJ GenderEnder! \n  \n  \n  \nSupported in part by \n \nFREE and open to the public but RSVP required.  (Donations gratefully accepted at the door.)

SUMMARY:Storming Caesars Palace: PBS Documentary Screening + Q&A with Author Annelise Orleck
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Junction Arts & Media for a screening of newly premiered PBS documentary Storming Caesars Palace\, followed by a Q&A with local author and historian\, Annelise Orleck\, whose book inspired the film. \nAnnelise Orleck’s Storming Caesars Palace tells the story of the revolutionary Black women welfare organizers of Las Vegas who spearheaded an evergreen\, radical revisioning of American economic justice in the 1970s\, trailblazing a movement that proved that poor mothers are the real experts on poverty\, providing job training\, libraries\, medical access\, daycare centers and housing to the poor.  Orleck introduces Ruby Duncan\, a sharecropper turned White House advisor who led the charge on the long war on poverty waged against the poor Black mothers of Las Vegas. According to Ruby\, “Poor women must dream their highest dreams and never stop\,” and she\, with the help of Mary Wesley and Alversa Beals\, did exactly that. \nThis timely reissue tells the little-known story of a pioneering group of Black mothers who built one of this country’s most successful antipoverty programs. \nFree and open to the public. Please RSVP for this event below\, as we have limited capacity.
