SUMMARY:"A Night of Poetry & Black Music" - Book Release Party & Reading by Vievee Francis\, with music by Steven Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Live Music\, Barbecue\, Film Screenings\, Book Reading\, Signing\, and Dance Party Celebration \n \nAcclaimed poet Vievee Francis brings a “Night of Poetry & Black Music” and book release reading from her new work\, The Shared World to JAM.  Her latest collection imagines the ideas and ideals and spaces of the Black woman\, delving into inherited memories and restrictions between families\, lovers\, and strangers and the perception and inconvenient truth of Black woman as mother—with or without child. Books will be sold on site by Still North Books & Bar with BBQ from Wicked Awesome BBQ. \n  \nLive Blues music will be headlined by visiting artist Steven Johnson\, CEO of the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation and grandson of blues legend Robert Johnson\, of Crystal Springs\, MS with band Kit Creeger\, Doc Winslow\, Steve Drebber\, David Westphalen\, and Jakob Breitbach.  A sneak peek of documentary-film-in-progress\, “I Believe I’ll Go Back Home\,” directed by Samantha Davidson Green with partial funding from Mississippi Humanities Council\, will also be shown. Debunking the myth of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil in exchange for his talent\, the film illuminates a missing chapter Robert Johnson’s life when he returned home to Copiah Co. Mississippi at a critical point in his musical development\, fathered a child\, and left a living legacy in the Johnson grandchildren who are working to inspire future generations through the elevation of blues heritage and uniting of sacred and secular music in the African American tradition. \n  \n \nThe night will close out with a dance party with JAM’s own inimitable DJ GenderEnder! \n  \n  \n  \nSupported in part by \n \nFREE and open to the public but RSVP required.  (Donations gratefully accepted at the door.)

SUMMARY:Still No Word from You: An Evening of Readings from Authors Peter Orner\, Sara Lippmann\, Ricardo Siri and Vievee Francis
DESCRIPTION:An evening of author readings from new works presented by JAM and the Norwich Bookstore\n\nBrooklyn-based short story writer Sara Lippmann reads from her first novel\, Lech (published fall 2022). Illustrator and cartoonist Ricardo Siri reads excerpts from his graphic novels. Poet and Professor of Creative Writing Vievee Francis reads selections from her work.  And Norwich-based author Peter Orner read selections from his newly released non-fiction collection\, Still No Word From You.  Free & open to the public\, RSVP required.\n\n\nBooks for sale at JAM thanks to the Norwich Bookstore with book signing to follow.\n\n“Orner is a highly lauded author whose writing\, in both fiction and nonfiction\, is an act of wizardry. In each of these micro-essays\, he reduces the meat of his own life down to the bone\, then stirs in fatty excerpts from hundreds of stories\, novels and poems by writers ranging from Woolf to Rhys\, Babel to Kafka. The resulting brew sometimes scalds\, sometimes soothes\, but always proves that literature can be a kind of sustenance.” \n– New York Times Book Review \n\n\nA San Francisco Chronicle Favorite Book of 2022:\n“This book is never leaving my possession.”\n– Kathryn Ma\, The San Francisco Chronicle\n\n“Still No Word from You Redefines the Experience of Reading…Orner shape shifts and time travels.”\n– Los Angeles times\n\n“Peter Orner’s work clings close to life\, to the unadorned\, dead and haunting Actual.”\n– Marilynne Robinson\n\n\n\nIf RSVP’s reach capacity\, please join us virtually!
