SUMMARY:Anonyms with Inua Ellams
DESCRIPTION:About Anonyms\nWhat’s in a name? Dive into the fascinating world of names as writer Inua Ellams invites a panel of guests to dig deep and explore the story and meaning behind their own names. Our first 10 interested RSVPs will be participatory subjects! \n\n\n\nIn parts of West Africa it is believed children grow to embody their names; that a child named Peace will grow up to create serenity wherever they go. Other West Africans think this is nonsense\, but how do we come to be named? What then do we inherit? Do names change us? Who cares? And why should we?  Held before a live audience\, Inua Ellams guides intelligent\, funny and insightful guests through Anonyms\, a rich\, invasive and poignant exploration into what we are called\, and why. Audience members are invited to come along with the story and meaning behind their own names. \n\nABOUT INUA ELLAMS \nBorn in Nigeria\, Inua Ellams is a poet\, playwright & performer\, graphic artist & designer and founder of: The Midnight Run (an arts-filled\, night-time\, urban walking experience.)\, The Rhythm and Poetry Party (The R.A.P Party) which celebrates poetry & hip hop\, and Poetry + Film / Hack (P+F/H) which celebrates Poetry and Film. Identity\, Displacement & Destiny are reoccurring themes in his work\, where he tries to mix the old with the new: traditional African oral storytelling with contemporary poetics\, paint with pixel\, texture with vector. \n\nIN PARTNERSHIP WITH HOPKINS CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT DARTMOUTH COLLEGE \n \n

SUMMARY:MEDIATED LIVES: The Family Historian with Dena Rueb Romero and Richard Neugass
DESCRIPTION:Richard Neugass and Dena Rueb Romero will discuss two family histories touched by the Holocaust and the roll of family historians in keeping the archive alive. How does media promote memory and what are the potential pitfalls? \nAfter her father’s death\, Dena Rueb Romero accidentally discovered a box of letters at her parents’ home. The letters dated back to 1938. These letter illuminated for Dena her parents’ lives during the war and filled in gaps of information that had haunted her childhood. Romero uses both family documents and historical research to flesh out her parents’ moving love story\, the growing hostilities toward the German Jewish population\, her grandparents’ increasing desperation\, and her father’s hard work to help his loved ones escape Nazi Germany in her debut book\, All for You.  \nPainters tell stories about their subjects through pictures. Richard tells stories about his subjects by recording and preserving a dialogue about their life adventures. Turning his focus inward toward his own family history\, Richard excavates the incredible story of his father\, Herman Neugass\, the ‘Human Bullet’—an American Jewish sprinter who famously chose to boycott the 1936 Olympic trials in protest against Nazi antisemitism. \n\n\n\nAbout DENA RUEB ROMERO \nDena Rueb Romero grew up and lives in Hanover\, New Hampshire. She graduated from Brandeis University and received an MA in English from the University of Virginia and an MSW from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. Her essay about German citizenship was published in a book about reclaiming German citizenship.  All for You is her first full-length book. Dena sings in a women’s chorus\, volunteers at a daycare center\, and works with an organization supporting refugees and asylum seekers. \n\n\n  \nAbout RICHARD NEUGASS \nRichard developed a business offering “video memoir” to individuals and families. Preparing subject(s) on how to approach their life stories and then videotaping them as they presented those stories is his forte.  In undergraduate studies at Amherst College he majored in political science and learned that history is what cultures believe about the stories.  After retiring Richard became an active volunteer with OSHER@Dartmouth\, an organization dedicated to providing lifelong learning opportunities. \n\n\n\nABOUT MEDIATED LIVES\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of JAM’s “Mediated Lives” series which aims to explore the roll of our current media landscape in shaping American culture\, free speech\, and democracy.

SUMMARY:STARLINGS : LEAFLETS
DESCRIPTION:STARLINGS : LEAFLETS is an interactive video art installation by artist and designer\, Saba Maheen unpacking the IDF’s leaflet campaign in Gaza. View the web companion. \n \nSTARLINGS : LEAFLETS at Rutgers University \nABOUT SABA MAHEEN\n \nSaba Maheen (b.1997 Lawrenceville\, GA) is a female\, Muslim\, Bengali-American\, multimodal maker and thinker working with image\, reproduction\, and participation. Utilizing multimedic forms\, there is a porosity in the goals of her work: In the wake of the viralized Palestinian genocide\, Maheen urges her audience to return to a radical\, collective humanity for one another\, and to understand “hereness and thereness” of intersolidarity liberation. More specifically\, analyzing the diminishing rate of attention in response to short-form media\, she believes it is imperative to combat the flattening\, desensitizing effect that social media has beyond the screen. She considers portals that break down the dichotomy between print-digital\, time-space\, and human-computer. Her work tends toward repetition\, multiples\, editions\, versions\, iterations\, units\, modules\, and collections\, and is fabricated often through the most accessible and efficient means. What objects and systems can we influence to prevent a speculatively dark future? Saba Maheen received a B.A. in Studio Art\, Human Centered Design and Arabic Language from Dartmouth College (2020). Shooting internationally as a film photographer in the years following the pandemic\, she is now completing her MFA in Design at Mason Gross School of Art at Rutgers University.

SUMMARY:PeaceBirds
DESCRIPTION:The PeaceBirds Project is a community engaged art action that integrates shared stories of grief and renewal amidst the anguish of the repeated erasure of the people\, culture\, history\, Land and Water in what is left of Palestine. What is happening to Palestine parallels the continual nation-building\, ongoing land-grabs\, “slow violence” of colonization and collective massacres worldwide. And what is happening in Palestine opens up a crack\, a liminal space in which all kinds of disruptions and syncopations can occur. This project grew out of a shared desire of two artist friends\, Mona Shiber and JuPong Lin\, to transform the agony of witnessing atrocities happening around the world. Both artists come from lineages of occupation and struggle for sovereignty\, from Palestine and from Taiwan; both lands and peoples that have suffered from the “monstrosity” of colonization\, empire-building\, enslavement and bondage of living beings. This project invites all to fold doves and cranes to befriend our monsters\, to transform the monstrosities of modernism. \n \nPeaceBirds at Goddard College\, February – March 2024 \nABOUT MONA SHIBER AND JUPONG LIN \n \nMona Shiber\, MFA\, of Clear Vision Studio\, is a visual artist who is a first generation Palestinian America whose art has been shown locally\, nationally & internationally. She has worked with groups on an array of community art projects\, also teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and mentoring all levels. Her middle eastern roots grew out from an upbringing in the Deep South\, with a true gumbo mix of racial diversity\, Mardi Gras and Epiphany\, jambalaya and makloubeh. \nJuPong Lin is an independent artist-scholar and cultural worker who dances with horseshoe crabs and makes ceremony with cranes. Her work is dedicated to hospicing the dying colonized world and using the arts and poetics to create futures of joyful interspecies co-becoming. JuPong’s current poetry and socially-engaged art projects focus on shifting the paradigm of conquest and violent occupation by narrating new kinds of stories and worlds in pluriverses (many worlds) that honor beloved heartplaces. JuPong was a faculty member in the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College for nearly 20 years before the College closed in 2024. She recently completed her doctorate in Environmental Studies at Antioch University New England. \nRead more about PeaceBirds
