SUMMARY:Novel Formats #2: The Set Up
DESCRIPTION:The Set Up is the second movement of Rachel Bernsen’s loose performance suite\, Novel Formats. Each movement invites a different group of artists to experiment with a fluid vision of performance\, utilizing their range of expertise and individuality in the service of enacting her improvisational and choreographic structures. Novel Formats #2: The Set Up uses the dynamic of three as its defining structure to explore synthesis\, harmony\, and discord within the construct of an interdisciplinary performing ensemble. \nMany of Rachel Bernsen’s projects are investigations in collaboration and improvisation. Her series\, Novel Formats #1-7\,  is a set of seven performance events\, each prompted by the desire to rethink the understanding of and experience with improvisation as a form of performance and explore the boundaries between real time decision making and overt theatricality. \nEach installment asks the question: what happens when we come together in different social configurations\, each with its own possibilities for improvisation and contact? Improvisation asks us to notice what we’re doing in the moment\, to question learned and internalized value systems. We think our senses are right and true but so much is learned\, habitual. Novel Formats aims to interrupt these patterns through novelty\, risk\, and real time human connection.\n\n$5-10 recommended donation.\n\n\nFEATURING\nEllen Smith Ahern – dancer  https://ellensmithahern.com/ \n \nJulian Barnett – dancer  https://www.julianbarnett.com/ \n \nRachel Bernsen – dancer/director/instigator  https://rachelbernsen.com/ \n \nKyoko Kitamura – vocalizer\, keyboards  https://www.kyokokitamura.com/ \n \nMac Waters – electronics\, violist  https://macwaters.studio/ \n \nWATCH NOVEL FORMATS: A DIALOGUE (NUMBER ONE)\n \nAbout A Dialogue (number one)

SUMMARY:MEDIATED LIVES: An Honest Conversation About The Online Lives of Teens with Cindy Pierce
DESCRIPTION:Parents and educators are invited to speak openly with social sexuality educator Cindy Pierce about how to best support teenagers in their media-saturated lives. Cindy discusses the ever-changing pressures and challenges that teens face as they attempt to feel relevant in a fast-moving world. Cindy brings examples from her research and interviews to shed light on how stressful it can be for young people to navigate the overwhelming influences of social media\, porn\, and hookup culture. By speaking directly about these topics\, Cindy makes these conversations a little easier for everyone. \n\nABOUT CINDY PIERCE\n \nCindy Pierce is an author\, educational speaker\, sexuality educator\, comic storyteller\, innkeeper and mom of three young adults. Combining years of research with her storytelling skills\, Cindy engages audiences with her message supporting teens to make healthy choices and navigate cultural pressures\, both online and off. SUMMARY:MEDIATED LIVES: The United States vs. TikTok
DESCRIPTION:JAM welcomes the public to join this interactive Supreme Court oral arguments simulation in which YOU\, the audience\, will decide the case. Discussion about this case\, larger issues of free speech and social media it raises\, and the workings of the US Supreme court to follow. \nPresented in partnership with Vermont Law and Graduate School and Lebanon High School\, this event is free\, open to the public\, and will be recorded by JAM.  Please RSVP below. \nTHE FIRST AMENDMENT AND THE TIKTOK BAN: \nA MOOT COURT EXERCISE \nI. Overview \nIn 2024 Congress passed the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary\nControlled Application Act\,” often popularly referred to as the “TikTok Ban.”\nTikTok is a short-form video hosting service owned by the Chinese internet\ncompany ByteDance. The Act designates the People’s Republic of China as a\n“foreign adversary” nation. The Act requires ByteDance to divest TikTok\, so that\nTikTok is no longer owned and controlled by a Chinese company. If TikTok is not\ndivested\, it will no longer be permitted to operate in the United States.\nTikTok and ByteDance\, joined by several American creators\, persons who\npost creative content on TikTok\, filed a federal lawsuit claiming that the Act\nviolated the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of speech.\nIn this exercise the audience will hear an oral argument on the\nconstitutionality of the TikTok ban. Audience members will serve as members of\nthe United States Supreme Court. Rod Smolla\, President of Vermont Law and\nGraduate School\, will first play the role of a lawyer representing TikTok\, attacking\nthe TikTok Ban\, and then play the role of a lawyer representing the United States\,\ndefending the TikTok Ban. The audience members playing the roles of Supreme\nCourt Justices will be invited to interrupt and question both lawyer-advocates.\nFollowing the arguments the audience members will be invited to explain why they\nbelieve the Ban should or should not be upheld\, followed by an audience vote on\nthe outcome. \n\n \n  \n \nAbout Rodney A. Smolla\, JD\, President\, Vermont Law and Graduate School: \nPreviously president of Furman University\, and dean at Washington and Lee University and University of Richmond law schools\, Professor Smolla has long been a strong advocate for experiential learning\, the development of professional competencies\, and civic engagement. The author of more than 100 articles published in law reviews and other publications\, he is a nationally known scholar on matters relating to constitutional law\, civil rights\, freedom of speech\, and mass media\, particularly matters relating to libel and privacy.  Learn more. \n  \nABOUT MEDIATED LIVES\nThis event is part of JAM’s “Mediated Lives” series which aims to explore the roll of our current media landscape in shaping American culture\, free speech\, creativity\, community\, and democracy.

SUMMARY:Voices of the Voters Listening Party & Community Potluck Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Share food at JAM and debrief the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election with a presentation from Valley News alum\, Frances Mize on interviews with Upper Valley residents collected in the months leading up to the election for her podcast\, “Voices of the Voters.” Listen here! \n\nWANT TO BE INTERVIEWED?\nTo participate in an anonymous interview\, call 603-685-5716 or email frances@uvjam.org. Participation will involve an interview of up to 15 minutes\, and can be done over the phone or in person. \nDisclosure: The interviews\, while anonymous\, will be archived and publicly accessible on the JAM website. They may also be transcribed and distributed in print. Some interviews might also be used in a podcast-style audio story\, which would be on the JAM website too. \nABOUT VOICES OF THE VOTERS: THE UPPER VALLEY AND A HISTORIC ELECTION\nOral histories emphasize the importance of everyday experience\, serving as a record of feeling. This project aims to compile a “living” oral history of the Upper Valley in advance of the 2024 presidential election. In times such as these\, the lived reality of one’s citizenship and politics acts upon voters (and nonvoters alike) in profound ways. While there’s substantial reporting on partisan interests\, “Voices of the Voters” believes that the more personal side of the election has gone underexplored – and that how people are thinking about\, feeling about and framing current politics to themselves plays an important role in this moment in history. The project is less interested in who you’re voting for than how you feel about the country today\, and how you feel about the country’s future. Stepping aside from pigeon-holed\, issues-driven categorizing in more standard voter coverage\, this is an opportunity for a community “vibe check.”  \nThis work is made possible in part through grants from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and Vermont Humanities. \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout FRANCES MIZE\, freelance journalist \nFrances Mize is currently a freelance journalist and a 2024 Higher Education Fellow with the Institute for Citizens and Scholars. She is working on a series about apprenticeships and the trades in Vermont\, forthcoming in VTDigger. She was a 2022-2024 Report for America corps member with the Valley News\, where she covered rural and environmental issues\, municipal politics\, the growing socioeconomic gap\, and college campuses. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 2022. \n\n  \n\nABOUT MEDIATED LIVES\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of JAM’s “Mediated Lives” series which aims to explore the roll of our current media landscape in shaping American culture\, free speech\, and democracy. \n

SUMMARY:Anonyms with Inua Ellams
DESCRIPTION:About Anonyms\nWhat’s in a name? Dive into the fascinating world of names as writer Inua Ellams invites a panel of guests to dig deep and explore the story and meaning behind their own names. Our first 10 interested RSVPs will be participatory subjects! \n\n\n\nIn parts of West Africa it is believed children grow to embody their names; that a child named Peace will grow up to create serenity wherever they go. Other West Africans think this is nonsense\, but how do we come to be named? What then do we inherit? Do names change us? Who cares? And why should we?  Held before a live audience\, Inua Ellams guides intelligent\, funny and insightful guests through Anonyms\, a rich\, invasive and poignant exploration into what we are called\, and why. Audience members are invited to come along with the story and meaning behind their own names. \n\nABOUT INUA ELLAMS \nBorn in Nigeria\, Inua Ellams is a poet\, playwright & performer\, graphic artist & designer and founder of: The Midnight Run (an arts-filled\, night-time\, urban walking experience.)\, The Rhythm and Poetry Party (The R.A.P Party) which celebrates poetry & hip hop\, and Poetry + Film / Hack (P+F/H) which celebrates Poetry and Film. Identity\, Displacement & Destiny are reoccurring themes in his work\, where he tries to mix the old with the new: traditional African oral storytelling with contemporary poetics\, paint with pixel\, texture with vector. \n\nIN PARTNERSHIP WITH HOPKINS CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT DARTMOUTH COLLEGE \n \n

SUMMARY:MEDIATED LIVES: The Family Historian with Dena Rueb Romero and Richard Neugass
DESCRIPTION:Richard Neugass and Dena Rueb Romero will discuss two family histories touched by the Holocaust and the roll of family historians in keeping the archive alive. How does media promote memory and what are the potential pitfalls? \nAfter her father’s death\, Dena Rueb Romero accidentally discovered a box of letters at her parents’ home. The letters dated back to 1938. These letter illuminated for Dena her parents’ lives during the war and filled in gaps of information that had haunted her childhood. Romero uses both family documents and historical research to flesh out her parents’ moving love story\, the growing hostilities toward the German Jewish population\, her grandparents’ increasing desperation\, and her father’s hard work to help his loved ones escape Nazi Germany in her debut book\, All for You.  \nPainters tell stories about their subjects through pictures. Richard tells stories about his subjects by recording and preserving a dialogue about their life adventures. Turning his focus inward toward his own family history\, Richard excavates the incredible story of his father\, Herman Neugass\, the ‘Human Bullet’—an American Jewish sprinter who famously chose to boycott the 1936 Olympic trials in protest against Nazi antisemitism. \n\n\n\nAbout DENA RUEB ROMERO \nDena Rueb Romero grew up and lives in Hanover\, New Hampshire. She graduated from Brandeis University and received an MA in English from the University of Virginia and an MSW from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. Her essay about German citizenship was published in a book about reclaiming German citizenship.  All for You is her first full-length book. Dena sings in a women’s chorus\, volunteers at a daycare center\, and works with an organization supporting refugees and asylum seekers. \n\n\n  \nAbout RICHARD NEUGASS \nRichard developed a business offering “video memoir” to individuals and families. Preparing subject(s) on how to approach their life stories and then videotaping them as they presented those stories is his forte.  In undergraduate studies at Amherst College he majored in political science and learned that history is what cultures believe about the stories.  After retiring Richard became an active volunteer with OSHER@Dartmouth\, an organization dedicated to providing lifelong learning opportunities. \n\n\n\nABOUT MEDIATED LIVES\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of JAM’s “Mediated Lives” series which aims to explore the roll of our current media landscape in shaping American culture\, free speech\, and democracy.
