SUMMARY:PeaceBirds
DESCRIPTION:The PeaceBirds Project is a community engaged art action that integrates shared stories of grief and renewal amidst the anguish of the repeated erasure of the people\, culture\, history\, Land and Water in what is left of Palestine. What is happening to Palestine parallels the continual nation-building\, ongoing land-grabs\, “slow violence” of colonization and collective massacres worldwide. And what is happening in Palestine opens up a crack\, a liminal space in which all kinds of disruptions and syncopations can occur. This project grew out of a shared desire of two artist friends\, Mona Shiber and JuPong Lin\, to transform the agony of witnessing atrocities happening around the world. Both artists come from lineages of occupation and struggle for sovereignty\, from Palestine and from Taiwan; both lands and peoples that have suffered from the “monstrosity” of colonization\, empire-building\, enslavement and bondage of living beings. This project invites all to fold doves and cranes to befriend our monsters\, to transform the monstrosities of modernism. \n \nPeaceBirds at Goddard College\, February – March 2024 \nABOUT MONA SHIBER AND JUPONG LIN \n \nMona Shiber\, MFA\, of Clear Vision Studio\, is a visual artist who is a first generation Palestinian America whose art has been shown locally\, nationally & internationally. She has worked with groups on an array of community art projects\, also teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and mentoring all levels. Her middle eastern roots grew out from an upbringing in the Deep South\, with a true gumbo mix of racial diversity\, Mardi Gras and Epiphany\, jambalaya and makloubeh. \nJuPong Lin is an independent artist-scholar and cultural worker who dances with horseshoe crabs and makes ceremony with cranes. Her work is dedicated to hospicing the dying colonized world and using the arts and poetics to create futures of joyful interspecies co-becoming. JuPong’s current poetry and socially-engaged art projects focus on shifting the paradigm of conquest and violent occupation by narrating new kinds of stories and worlds in pluriverses (many worlds) that honor beloved heartplaces. JuPong was a faculty member in the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College for nearly 20 years before the College closed in 2024. She recently completed her doctorate in Environmental Studies at Antioch University New England. \nRead more about PeaceBirds
