SUMMARY:Voices of the Voters Listening Party & Community Potluck Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Share food at JAM and debrief the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election with a presentation from Valley News alum\, Frances Mize on interviews with Upper Valley residents collected in the months leading up to the election for her podcast\, “Voices of the Voters.” Listen here! \n\nWANT TO BE INTERVIEWED?\nTo participate in an anonymous interview\, call 603-685-5716 or email frances@uvjam.org. Participation will involve an interview of up to 15 minutes\, and can be done over the phone or in person. \nDisclosure: The interviews\, while anonymous\, will be archived and publicly accessible on the JAM website. They may also be transcribed and distributed in print. Some interviews might also be used in a podcast-style audio story\, which would be on the JAM website too. \nABOUT VOICES OF THE VOTERS: THE UPPER VALLEY AND A HISTORIC ELECTION\nOral histories emphasize the importance of everyday experience\, serving as a record of feeling. This project aims to compile a “living” oral history of the Upper Valley in advance of the 2024 presidential election. In times such as these\, the lived reality of one’s citizenship and politics acts upon voters (and nonvoters alike) in profound ways. While there’s substantial reporting on partisan interests\, “Voices of the Voters” believes that the more personal side of the election has gone underexplored – and that how people are thinking about\, feeling about and framing current politics to themselves plays an important role in this moment in history. The project is less interested in who you’re voting for than how you feel about the country today\, and how you feel about the country’s future. Stepping aside from pigeon-holed\, issues-driven categorizing in more standard voter coverage\, this is an opportunity for a community “vibe check.”  \nThis work is made possible in part through grants from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and Vermont Humanities. \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout FRANCES MIZE\, freelance journalist \nFrances Mize is currently a freelance journalist and a 2024 Higher Education Fellow with the Institute for Citizens and Scholars. She is working on a series about apprenticeships and the trades in Vermont\, forthcoming in VTDigger. She was a 2022-2024 Report for America corps member with the Valley News\, where she covered rural and environmental issues\, municipal politics\, the growing socioeconomic gap\, and college campuses. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 2022. \n\n  \n\nABOUT MEDIATED LIVES\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of JAM’s “Mediated Lives” series which aims to explore the roll of our current media landscape in shaping American culture\, free speech\, and democracy. \n
