ABOUT VOICES OF THE VOTERS: THE UPPER VALLEY AND A HISTORIC ELECTION

Oral histories emphasize the importance of everyday experience, serving as a record of feeling. This project aims to compile a “living” oral history of the Upper Valley in advance of the 2024 presidential election. In times such as these, the lived reality of one’s citizenship and politics acts upon voters (and nonvoters alike) in profound ways. While there’s substantial reporting on partisan interests, “Voices of the Voters” believes that the more personal side of the election has gone underexplored – and that how people are thinking about, feeling about and framing current politics to themselves plays an important role in this moment in history. The project is less interested in who you’re voting for than how you feel about the country today, and how you feel about the country’s future. Stepping aside from pigeon-holed, issues-driven categorizing in more standard voter coverage, this is an opportunity for a community “vibe check.”

This work is made possible in part through grants from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and Vermont Humanities.
